For today’s multinational companies, the S&OP dream is clear: one planning tool that works seamlessly for every market, every team, everywhere. However, the reality is tougher—different data structures, varying expectations, and diverse investment appetites across business units (BUs). As process consultants, our role is to bridge the differences between the dream and reality—discovering what’s possible today, envisioning what’s needed tomorrow, and designing solutions that balance ambition with practicality.

So, is there really one tool that can solve all these requirements?

It’s possible — but only if companies are willing to invest the right amount of time, money, and scale the scope. Most organizations face limits in one or more of these areas, which often means short timelines, a narrowed scope, or insufficient budgets. The result? A solution that may fall short of the original vision. However, with long-term commitment, BU-level rollouts, and a flexible tool supported by strong engineering, the global “one tool” ambition becomes achievable.

Best Practices in Action

  • Customization for Unique Needs

For example, one BU required a data integration that was completely different from what other BUs used. With global budget support, we customized the tool. It took some time to develop, but once in place, automation delivered lasting efficiency—no ongoing support needed, and the team could run S&OP/S&OE independently.

  • Beyond the Basics

Another BU didn’t just want to replicate existing dashboards; they wanted to bring in multiple data streams to assess risks and opportunities. Previously impossible in PBI/Excel, the global tool made it seamless—the integration unlocks insights once out of reach.

  • From Zero to Full S&OP

A BU with no structured S&OP process, previously reliant on one individual managing everything, gained transformative value. By linking complex data into the global tool, they accessed analyses they had always needed but couldn’t achieve with legacy tools.

The Takeaway

Digital transformation in S&OP isn’t about chasing a “perfect” global tool. It’s about balancing global ambition with local realities, investing where it matters, and ensuring flexibility in design. With the right roadmap, even the most diverse markets can be brought into a single, scalable solution that transforms planning from siloed struggles into global strength.
